One thing's for sure, if Naruto tries to take on Pain as he is now then hes going to get absolutely thrashed the only way hes gonna stand a chance against him is if he gets Jinchuriki training from Hachibi.

And since that training would take time something/someone has to save the village from Pain at the mo, or maybe Pain will retreat when he finds out Naruto isn't there.
